Pain in critically ill patients must be carefully and privately evaluated, it is important that nurses assess the patient as a whole, through reliable scales and according to each patient. Identify the management of intensive care nurses in the assessment and control of pain in critically ill patients in intensive care. This is a scope review, with qualitative data analysis, by searches in the virtual libraries Medline, Bdenf, Lilacs, Scielo, published in period 2016 to 2021. It was observed that many nurses, when evaluating pain, use only the pharmacological approach, emphasizing the importance of using, in addition to medication, alternative means of pain control. It was also identified that most nurses do not use specific scales to assess pain according to the uniqueness of each patient, so it is important to bring more studies on scales. Inadequate pain management by nurses’ results in negligence towards unresponsive patients. Therefore, it is understood that there is a need for nurses to improve their knowledge of pain management to provide more optimized care, ensuring excellent care.
