Patients who are in Adult Intensive Care Unit feel very anxious to be in this environment, and this can contribute to an increase in pain and, consequently, to a change in physical, emotional and psychological patterns. The use of complementary therapies is not yet a reality in this sector, so the objective of this research is to identify in the literature possible benefits of using complementary therapies in the care of adult critical ill patients. This is a scope review, with qualitative and quantitative data analysis, by searches in the virtual databases BDENF, IBECS, LILACS and PubMed-MEDLINE, of articles published in period 2017 to 2022. It was observed that practices such as music therapy, aromatherapy, massage therapy, transcutaneous electrical stimulation at acupuncture points, the lotus positions, virtual reality and hypnosis can bring significant benefits ranging from the reduction of anxiety and pain to the reduction of use opioids in the ICU, decreased delirium, reduced length of stay on mechanical ventilation, improved sleep and breathing patters, in addition to bringing relaxation and comfort to patients. However, more multicenter randomized controlled clinical trials are still needed in order to strengthen the ideas present in this study.
