This work aimed to characterize the water supply system adopted in rural communities in the municipality of Riacho Frio, State of Piauí. The methodology used corresponded to the field survey through on-site visits and photographic record to characterize the supply system adopted following classification as to the type of wells and macroscopic evaluation of the infrastructure parameters of the system adopted in the communities. A water supply system was characterized, characterized by the capture of artesian and excavated wells, the latter being predominant in the communities. As it is in general excavated wells, the system adopted in the communities is deficient in terms of the structural conditions of the wells, denoted by the lack of coating and protection measures against water pollution. In addition, no actions are taken to treat the water used by the communities, in any case the raw water used is taken up with the absence of even the simple disinfection process, responsible for eliminating pathogenic agents. It is evident that the problem of the water supply system for the rural communities studied revolves around the lack of monitoring and control of water quality, in most cases the quantity supplied is not the main problem of the system.
