Corn is among the main cereals cultivated worldwide, present in human, animal, and industrial food. The chain is very productive and has several advantages, for rural producers, entrepreneurs, agribusiness, and a large production capacity. Due to the great influence of corn in the economy, investment in new technologies is constant in the quest to improve the performance of this crop, both to increase its resistance to various types of pests and insects, and to increase production. The different corn cultivars are responsible for 50% of the productivity and the choice of the correct cultivar is crucial for the best possible crop performance. The hybrids are divided into single, double, and triple and are recommended for different production systems and have a great impact on productivity, grain uniformity, resistance to pests and diseases and adaptation. Corn has a different impact with respect to world, national and regional production, but its economic importance is consistent. The present study aimed to review the main characteristics, production, species, and cultivars of the corn crop.
