Abstract

The present study aimed to carry out an analysis of the current existing literature regarding the benefits and difficulties listed on exclusive breastfeeding until the sixth month of life of babies. Therefore, an integrative literature review was carried out, based on the selection of articles through the following databases: Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO), NCBI/PubMed Virtual Library (National Center for Biotechnology Information), and LILACS - Bireme (Latin American and Caribbean Literature on Health Sciences), with the year of publication between 2014 and 2022. The results obtained from the search in the consulted databases resulted in 111 articles, of which 28 were pre-selected, and subsequently read in full, 9 articles were defined to compose the study. Thus, the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding, the difficulties encountered by mothers and the factors that lead to early weaning can be observed. Concluding that breastfeeding is an irreplaceable practice, and breast milk is a complete food necessary for the good development of babies and is a factor that also directly reflects on the mother's quality of life. And in this way, health professionals, as well as nursing professionals, are fundamental in encouraging this practice.
