Socioeconomic profile and knowledge of guide-pilots of the middle River Negro basin, Amazonas

In Amazon, the municipality of Barcelos has stood out as one of the main destinations for those who practice sport fishing. The aim of present study was describing the socioeconomic profile and the knowledge about legislation of sport fishing of guide-pilots from Rio Negro Middle Basin, Amazonas. A semi-structured interview was carried out using questionnaires with guide-men (N = 55) between January to December of 2016. The average age of the guide-men was 42, with an age range of 40 to 50 (39.59 %), married, with incomplete elementary education (40.00%). The main form of service contract was by season (56.00%). About 56.36% of guide-men informed that they did not have knowledge of the current legislation on sport fishing, most of them had never witnessed any supervision approach (61.82%) by authorities. For most sport fishing is an activity that causes impacts (49.09%), mainly to fish, resulting in injuries (90.91%). The pilot guides showed low level of knowledge about regulatory laws of sport fishing, requiring greater attention by the authorities in order to facilitate the access of information for the guides.
