The study evaluated the parameters turbidity and spores of aerobic bacteria, indirect indicators of protozoa, in the clarification and filtration stages of water treatment in a full-scale water treatment plant (ETA) in the Cariri region of Paraíba, in the Brazilian semi-arid region. The ETA was monitored for 8 consecutive hours, right after the filters were washed, with two-hour intervals between collections, observing the removal efficiency of the parameters on a logarithmic scale. The water clarification step was ineffective in reducing turbidity, which showed values ranging from 0 to -0.2 log, resulting in increased turbidity in relation to raw water. On the other hand, the removal of spores from aerobic bacteria, in this step, obtained a variation of 0.2 to 1 log. The filtration step was responsible for the highest treatment efficiency, both for turbidity and spores, reaching maximum values of 0.5 and 1.6 log respectively. The average removal when compared together to the clarification + filtration steps reaches 0.26 log for turbidity and 1.95 log for spores, showing in this study the importance of filtration in water treatment. Due to the undersized decanters and other structural problems of the ETA, it was not possible to meet the potability standards recommended by current legislation, in relation to the evaluated parameters.
