Unplanned urban expansions transform landscapes, compromising environmental quality. Many of these transformations are the result of soil sealing and reduction vegetation cover. In Garanhuns / PE, they occur in popular subdivisions built through housing incentive programs. The municipal economy needs to remain active and opportunities are essential, however, natural structures need attention and guarantees, as they provide quality of life and the environment. Environmental Economics aims at business sustainability and seeks minimum conditions for the permanence of natural structures related to them. This research aimed to reflect on the main milestones and events related to urban expansion in Garanhuns/PE and on the contributions of the municipal environmental policy regarding the compensation of green areas suppressed by the urban expansion process, to promote an economic development model that takes the necessary actions for the restoration of natural structures. The methodology consisted on bibliographical research, collection of data related to urban expansion and results obtained by hypothetical case studies, these contributions were reflected on, answering 2 guiding questions: (1) The determinations of the Municipal Environmental Policy to promote the compensation of the suppression of natural areas and thus allow urban expansion are satisfactory from the point of view of Environmental Economics ?; (2) What are the Economic and Environmental benefits associated with the implementation of the Municipal Environmental Policy? There was an increase in trees in contrast to the high percentage of impermeable soil, indicating better environmental quality and this strong argument must be worked on to improve real estate value, contributing to the municipal economic development and to the Environmental Economy.
