Obesity is a growing public health problem worldwide, and the use of herbal medicines has been investigated as a treatment option. An integrative literature review was conducted, which allowed for the inclusion of different types of studies and identification of gaps in the literature. Article selection was based on criteria of methodological quality and relevant results. The limitations of the studies included were discussed, as well as ethical issues involved in the use of herbal medicines. The results indicated that curcumin, ginseng, green tea, garlic, and cinnamon may be effective in the treatment of obesity, with significant reductions in body weight, BMI, waist circumference, and other anthropometric measures. The evidence suggests that herbal medicines have potential in the treatment of obesity, but further high-quality research is needed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of these treatments. Another point to consider is that herbal medicines may have side effects and interact with other medications. Therefore, it is important for individuals to talk to their doctors before starting any herbal medicine treatment for obesity, especially if they are already taking other medications or have pre-existing medical conditions. Additionally, it is important to note that herbal medicines should not replace conventional treatments for obesity, such as diet and lifestyle changes. Instead, they can be used as a complementary option to help improve treatment outcomes.
