The importance of home dental care for the elderly

Abstract

Home dental care for the elderly is a set of preventive measures and minimal interventions designed to promote oral health and guide family members and caregivers. It is considered an education and health strategy that aims to intervene in the health and disease process of vulnerable elderly people in a multidisciplinary way. The objective is to present home dental care for the elderly. Integrative literature review with analysis of 8 articles found on SciELO, Birene, Lilacs and Academic Google platforms, the analyzed articles were published between the years 2015 to 2021. They were selected after applying the inclusion criteria and excluding 8 articles to be analyzed in this review article. This research aims to solve practical problems, home dental care emphasizes the main systemic changes and possible effects on the oral cavity, the need for effective participation by the dentist and oral health promotion guidelines that help family members, caregivers and professionals involved in this care. It was concluded that the dental surgeon is a fundamental professional for promoting the health of the elderly, and home care requires an adaptation of the patient's family environment, thus aiming to perform the necessary dental procedures.

Possui graduação em Odontologia pela Fundação UNIRG (2008). Especialização em Saúde Pública, Marketing e Vendas e Odontopediatria, mestre em Ciências e Meio Ambiente pela Universidade Federal do Pará (UFPA). Atualmente é professora e coordenadora no curso de Odontologia da FIC (Faculdade Integrada Carajás). Tem 13 anos de experiência clínica na área de Odontologia, com ênfase em Odontopediatria.
