Understanding fish diet is an important tool in obtaining information about the structure of aquatic communities and biological interactions, especially regarding environmental quality. However, in the Pantanal, the flood pulse entails an environmental transformation that promotes the dietary dynamics of various fish species, and those food chain base species may be under even greater pressure due to water amplitude and availability of food resources. Thus, in this work, the description of the food resources exploited by Tetragonopterus argenteus in the Paraguay River, North Pantanal, Cáceres (MT), during the flood (2012), flood, ebb and drought periods (2013). The specimens were collected and taken to the UNEMAT Ichthyology Laboratory, where weighing, evisceration, and diet characterization were performed based on frequency of occurrence (% Fi), volumetric proportion (% Vi), combined with the Food Index (IAi%). as well as through the Costello diagram and rarefaction curve. The feeding of T. argenteus varied during the hydrological cycle periods with items such as macroinvertebrates, plant material and fish rest. T. argenteus can be classified as opportunistic herbivore and there is an influence of the flood pulse in the diet, altering the availability of food items during the hydrological cycle, as well as the possible interference of barley in the feeding habits of species used as baits by the population place.
