Access to electricity is fundamental for the economic and social development of a community. In spite of being considered an essential public service, some regions of Brazil are electrically excluded. The northern region of the country, mainly in rural communities, is affected by this problem due to the greater economic and structural obstacles to the integration of energy transmission and distribution systems. Renewable energies are increasingly being highlighted as an alternative to mitigate or solve such problems. Therefore, this work aimed to dimension a photovoltaic system not connected to the grid (off grid) for single-family homes in a rural community in the insular region of Belém, Pará, which commonly uses fossil fuel sources for electrification, or live without any access to electricity. Mathematical calculations were performed, according to information about the energy consumption of the homes, as well as according to incident solar irradiation data, made available by the database of the Reference Center for Solar and Wind Energy Sérgio Brito, considering the critical month method, for sizing the system and implementation costs. The results showed that a system unit for a single-family residence would have an average current cost of approximately R$28,382.00, with a 25-year period of the technology's useful life. Through the analyzes carried out in this study, off grid photovoltaic solar energy is suggested as a viable alternative for the electrical supply of the evaluated community.
