Decomposed babassu stem (Attalea speciosa Mart.) as substrate for the production of papaya seedlings

The productive performance of papaya in the orchard depends mainly on the quality of seedlings production. Therefore, it is necessary to search for techniques that leads to agricultural sustainability. The research purpose was to use decomposed stem of babassu as a substrate in the production of Carica papaya L. seedlings. The experiment was carried out under greenhouse conditions at the Centro de Ciências Agrárias e Ambientais (CCAA) of Universidade Federal do Maranhão (UFMA) It was used a completely randomized design, with 5 treatments and 4 replications, totaling 20 experimental plots. The substrates were composed of decomposed stem of babassu (DBS) in different proportions: T1- 20% of DBS + 80% of Soil; T2- 40% of DBS + 60% of Soil; T3- 60% of DBS + 40% of Soil; T4- 80% of DBS + 20% de Soil; T5- 100% de DBS. It was verified a significant effect for plant height, stem diameter, aerial shoot mass, dry mass of the root system and Dickson quality index, while for root volume there was no significant difference between the different DBS compositions. The treatments with higher inclusion of DBS, equivalent to 80% and 100% can be used as substrate for the production of papaya seedlings, due to the ease of obtaining and low cost.
