With the democratization of access to higher education there has been a significant expansion in the number of courses and vacancies in federal institutions of higher education. But, the same policies that have contributed to this expansion have not been effective in providing conditions for students to stay until the end of their course. It is necessary to know the characteristics of these new students who are entering these institutions, especially those located in the interior, where most of this expansion has occurred. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the main differences between students entering the civil engineering course at the A.C. Simões Campus and the Sertão Campus at the Federal University of Alagoas — UFAL between the years 2014 to 2018. As for methodology, the study is classified according to procedures as bibliographic, documentary and case study, and according to objectives as descriptive, with a quantitative approach. The data was collected in electronic databases and processed using statistical software. From the analyses, it was found that both groups have similar characteristics with regard to the basic profile, but with regard to the academic profile, the inland campus has lower rates in relation to the capital campus.
