Aging is a natural, individual, irreversible, universal and non-pathological process. Considered the last stage of the life cycle, it simultaneously provides opportunities for progress and challenges for humanity, especially in providing elderly people with aging as a positive experience, based on the promotion of health, social participation, and physical, socioeconomic and emotional security. Studies show that in Brazil, elderly people aged 60 years or over represented 13.7% in 2020, and will represent 23.8% in 2040 of the national population. With the increase in Brazilian life expectancy, vitamin D deficiency in the elderly population aged 60 years and over has become a public health problem, since when dealing with risk factors for vitamin D deficiency, the elderly are cited as a susceptible group, due to changes in vitamin D metabolism, low sun exposure and decline in renal function. To conduct a systematic review of the literature on the importance of vitamin D for the elderly aged 60 years and over. Scientific articles were selected from the LILACS and SciELO electronic databases, with a time frame from 2016 to 2021, and language in Portuguese. A detailed analysis of scientific articles was performed, resulting in 7 for analysis. Vitamin D is important for the elderly population aged 60 years and over to show its benefits for health, and consequently, for the quality of life of the elderly in the aging process. Evidence for the benefits of vitamin D is increased bone mineral density, increased postural and dynamic balance, strengthened muscle strength, decreased risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, and prevention of dementia, falls and fractures.
