The objective of this article was to analyze the economic and environmental efficiency (ecoefficiency) of the countries belonging to the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) for the period from 1991 to 2012. The data used were of secondary origin obtained from the site of the World Bank. The BRICS countries reached low values related to the Eco-efficiency Index. The results showed that over the years studied the average value of the Eco-efficiency Index decreased. South Africa showed the best results and China had the worst results. South Africa achieved more positive results due to the use of renewable energy and the low emission of greenhouse gases. China is one of the countries that pollute the planet, although it is implementing several programs in the area to reduce these emissions. These results suggest that much still needs to be done so that the numbers on eco-efficiency can in fact become relevant and essential in public policymaking and public awareness.
