Bryophytes contain secondary metabolites with characteristic aromas, bitter taste, and pungency, which can be used for the control of insects. They are suitable plants for studying natural substances and can be used as part of the Integrated Pest Management system (IPM). The insecticide activity by ingestion and/or phagodeterrent activity of the ethanolic extract of Campylopus surinamensis moss were assessed in the control of Spodoptera frugiperda. Five treatments (2.0%; 1.0%; 0.5% and 0.25% µg/µl and the control) were tested using the no-chance assessment method. Mortality was observed after 24, 48 and 72 hours of application of the plant extract, as well as phagodeterrent action of the extract at concentrations of 2.00 μg/μL; 1.00 μg/μL and 0.50 μg/μL after the 24-hour period of treatment application. Statistical tests showed that Campylopus surinamensis in any of the analyzed concentrations did not produce insecticidal effect on S. frugiperda 3rd-instar worms, however, due to the phagodeterrent action, they are suitable for the control of this pest insect occurring in agricultural systems.
