Variability and potential of the wind power source for electric power generation in the amazon coast

Several communities live in the coastal region of the state of Pará and because they are in more isolated regions, this part of the population does not receive electricity that is distributed and seek other sources of energy to develop their activities. In this sense, this work aims to characterize the variability of horizontal wind acting in the Cuiarana region (Amazon coast) and to evaluate the potential for wind power generation. A series of wind direction and speed data was used at 12 meters in the period from 2011 to 2018. The data were pooled and calculated for their occurrence within 16 driving sectors and 6 speed classes (m/s). The months of the second semester presented the highest frequency speeds above 3 m/s. The predominant direction throughout the year was from the east and northeast influenced by the action of the southeast and northeast trade winds. The southern spring period recorded the highest average hourly speeds of the year mainly between 12:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. hours. The Cuiarana region has potential for wind power generation. However, knowledge of wind variability in other coastal locations and at other height levels is required.
