The management with responsible use of natural resources is one of the most significant global challenges, especially in Brazil, which has the second largest forest area on the planet and is the first in tropical forests. In this context, the present study aimed to diagnose the conditions of productive systems through the perception of agroforestry (AFS) and conventional farming systems (CFS) in the rural area of the municipality of Valença, Territory of Identity Baixo Sul da Bahia (Brazil). The qualitative-quantitative analysis was performed by recording data using semi-structured questionnaires applied in 20 properties, 10 in AFS and 10 in CFS, using the snowball sampling technique. The collected data were used to calculate the indices: land use intensity (LUI), land use diversity index (LUDI), perception of conservative attitudes (PCA), perception of soil erosion, and perception of the impact of the water exploitation index (WEI). Regarding schooling, the male public (30%) had completed high school and, of these, 55% were attending elementary school II, 70% did not complete it and 45% had completed high school. The producers presented higher values of LUI (0,50) and PCA (0,71) in AFS (0,35) related to CFS (0,44), respectively, with regard to the activities or holdings carried out, however they were similar regarding the LUDI. In general, the environmental perception demonstrated by rural landowners becomes a preponderant instrument for decision-making and strengthening of public policies for social inclusion, as well as in the reduction of inequalities for rural development aimed at sustainability.
