Phosphate (P) is a key element to plant development in farmlands, but in high concentrations can cause eutrophication, pollution, and contamination processes, especially when it reaches the water. In this context, soil management can be an essential tool to reduce P levels in water bodies. The current study aimed to evaluate soil management scenarios in a rural drainage basin used as a drinking water supply for Pelotas city, RS. The study was carried out in the Epaminondas Hydrographic Basin, located in the municipality of Pelotas, a southern city in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Soil samples were collected at the 0-20 cm layer to determine available P and clay content. From the data analyses, P losses scenarios by soil erosion were developed considering different possibilities of rain precipitation and phosphate fertilizer doses. In general, the soil demonstrated substantial P adsorption capacity through the application of phosphate fertilizers and a considerable P adsorption capacity by clay contained in analysed the soil layer.
