Contribution of a recycling cooperative in the management of urban solid waste in São Paulo

The activities of waste pickers contribute to increasing recycling to reduce waste and help the environment. This study aimed to analyze the cooperative Cooperativa Vira-Lata of recyclable materials and its members in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. Ten recyclable waste cooperative members who work in the cooperative participated. Data were collected using a questionnaire through qualitative and quantitative analysis on the perception of cooperative members about their work and the cooperative. The results of this study show that it is necessary to improve the working conditions of these workers, who are fundamental for the management of urban solid waste.
