Recyclable waste collectors: occupational risks and public health aspects

The objective of this work was to characterize the experience and occupational risks and aspects of collective health of informal voluntary collectors of recyclable waste, mainly caps and PET bottles, who help patients undergoing treatment diagnosed with cancer in the municipality of Mogi Guaçu, São Paulo, Brazil. The identification of the scenario of recyclable waste collectors was based on a survey of primary data, through interviews. The research is characterized as a case study and was built from a bibliographic survey, using descriptive and explanatory methods, with a quantitative and qualitative approach. The results showed that: all collectors reported some type of occupational disease; however they considered work an activity of physical practice and recognized the importance of action in favor of the environment. The management of selective collection permeates the technologies assisted in this process. The precarious situation in the distribution of dumpsters in the community, which favors the appearance of disease vectors In short, it is necessary to expand selective collection with social inclusion, expanding discussions and policies for the implementation of sustainable development objectives in cities.
