As a result of the prolonged drought faced by the city, the Federal University of Campina Grande has had difficulty to irrigate the green areas of the campus, however the institution has two lakes that can be used for this purpose. The present study aimed to analyze the quality of these waters to evaluate their potential for reuse in the green areas of the campus. The research was carried out in the year 2016, between March and October, and water quality was evaluated using a multi-parameter probe and physico-chemical and microbiological laboratorial analyzes. The results were compared with values established by Resolution No. 357 of 2005 of the National Environment Council (CONAMA), as well as used to calculate the Water Quality Index (IQA). The IQA of Lake1 was rated between ‘bad’ and ‘very bad’ and that of Lake 2 as ‘bad’ for all months of the study. The results obtained, showed that the UFCG surface waters are unfit for unrestricted irrigation, since the effluents contributing to the recharge of these water bodies are responsible for the poor water quality both in terms of physicochemical and microbiological parameters. The results of this study can provide valuable information about the probable levels of microbiological risk associated with the use of such surface water in cities, especially in the semi-arid region of Brazil, and give an indication of the degree of treatment required.
