With the socioeconomic and socio-environmental advances in recent decades in Brazil, it is possible to observe the transformations arising from public policies more directed to the reality of the country. However, the country still has several difficulties faced by the population collectively with regard to social demands. Therefore, the aim was to characterize the social, economic, cultural, and environmental aspects of the county of Ilha Grande in the state of Piauí. Thus, an exploratory, descriptive, documentary, and bibliographic investigation was carried out, having the inductive method as a parameter, in addition to field research with the application of 570 forms to the local population. Several socioeconomic and socio-environmental problems were identified, such as: the disorderly growth of urban space and the lack of adequate infrastructure to meet basic needs, situations that degrade the environment and, at the same time, harm the quality of the local population, such as the lack of water almost daily. Moreover, it was found that most budget revenues come from external sources, and 91.2% of these, especially, come from the Federal Government. Such conditions demonstrate the county's socioeconomic vulnerability and inefficiency – a situation that makes it impossible to apply public policies that meet basic local needs.
