The precepts of sustainability and sustainable development are gaining relevance as a protagonist in institutional discussions at local, national and even global levels. Complying with these precepts demonstrates social, economic and environmental responsibility in the pursuit of its goals. Therefore, there are several existing tools to assess the adherence of institutional practices to such precepts. One of them is UI GreenMetrics, which annually performs a ranking of higher education institutions based on 06 criteria and 39 indicators. The present study aimed to verify the level of application of these precepts through the analysis of documents, reports and information available on the website of the University of Minho – UMINHO, best Portuguese ranked University in that ranking. In addition, searching for elements about the result in the ranking, it was also sought for information that could demonstrate that the institution promotes actions, investigations and studies for sustainable development. From a pragmatic point of view, the research in question endorses the position of other researchers in the sense that, although there are actions and investigations on the matter, there is still a lot to be done for a change from a concept of sustainability and sustainable development to a concept focused for these matters.
