Housing construction is one of the largest cement consumers in Brazil. Cement requires a large amount of raw material and energy for its production, with emissions harmful to the environment. This work aims to quantify the environmental impacts related to the use of cement in Brazilian housing construction, per square meter of built area, also emphasizing the use of water resources throughout its production chain. For this purpose, three standard housing projects Minha Casa Minha Vida were used as a reference for calculating the quantity of cement, the environmental impacts of cement were determined based on the assessment of its life cycle, water footprint and water scarcity footprint. The results show that the greatest impacts are related to the emissions of gases that cause climate change and the excessive use of water resources. Finally, the present study provides support for improvements in architectural projects, construction processes and materials used, in order to minimize environmental damage.
