The forest microclimate influences several ecological processes such as nutrient cycling and plant growth. This study aimed to characterize the understory microclimate of a remnant of Seasonal Semideciduous Forest and an open field during spring. The study was carried out in a forest remnant of the Pacotuba National Forest, located in Cachoeiro de Itapemirim – ES, where two meteorological stations were installed: one inside the forest and one in the adjacent open area. From October to December 2019, in both areas, daily measurements were taken of photosynthetically active radiation, radiation balance, temperature and relative humidity, soil surface temperature and soil temperature at 2 cm, 5 cm, 10 cm and 20 cm. The transmission of solar radiation was attenuated in the forest interior during the day, resulting in lower energy availability for sensible heat fluxes, latent heat and soil heat flux. At night, however, the canopy acted as a screen for long-wave radiation, conserving energy in the system, and making microclimatic variation reduced indoors compared to the open area.
