Environmental quality index in the semi-arid: methodological proposal based on the pressure-state-response analytical model

Indicative of urban, social and current economic development within the existing capitalist model, are synonymous with progress and evolution. However, to reach them somehow, degrades, pollutes or modifies the environment. Over the last thirty years, in the Vale of Açu (RN) the growth of the productive base reflected in the diversification and worsening environmental impacts waving to need to establish a balance between the practices and the carrying capacity of local natural resources. Accordingly, the Environmental Indicators constitute as tools to measure the interference of processes on environmental quality by raising essential to planning and management actions that lead to sustainability information. Based on the analytical model of indicator Pressure-State-Response, the research was developed with the aim of evaluating the environmental quality Vale of Açu according to the main economic activities of the region. To this end, integrated methodologies Rufino (2002) and Mattos Filho and Perez (2007) to compose the index Environmental Quality Vale of Açu. The results showed that left the environmental quality in the Valley of the main economic exploitation, in general, is on the threshold between the intermediate tracks and bad.
