This paper presents the result of theoretical research that aimed to conceptually articulate the terms “urban occupation”, “eco-housing” and “ecosystem interaction”. The process was based on a systematic literature review and included the analysis of references published between 2010 and 2020. The Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Web of Science and Google Scholar databases were consulted considering references that conceptually approach one of the listed search descriptors or a combination of two descriptors and references, whose conceptual approach to the descriptors would support the intended theoretical design. Initially, 50 references were selected both nationally and internationally. Of these, 33 were chosen and, later, 20 were analyzed using the methodology of Content Analysis (CA). The CA involved the following steps: a) Pre-analysis - textual organization; b) Data coding from analysis categories, c) Preparation of the preliminary conceptual diagram and d) Preparation of the final diagram. The conceptual articulation subsidized a framework for observation and analysis of small occupations, under the urban ecosystem approach, considering the following aspects: 1 characterization of urban habitats (built/aquatic/green/waste environment); 2 aspects of (eco) urban settlement (support capacity/eco city/eco village) and 3 characteristics of eco housings (vernacular architecture/bioconstruction).
