This research aimed to verify the state of the art in relation to instruments for renewing environmental licenses in mining activity. Initially, the issue of mining activity and its relevance to the state of Minas Gerais was addressed and then we discussed the process of renewing environmental licenses with public agencies. To check the state of the art on the subject, systematic review was used. A protocol was established with keywords to be searched, databases to be used, inclusion and exclusion criteria as well as the focus of analysis of the selected documents. Following the defined strategy, the bibliographic search resulted in 149 documents, the selection based on the analysis of the titles reduced the number to 27, the reading of the abstracts revealed that only 11 fit the proposed theme. A full reading of the 11 selected documents revealed that all had significant contributions to our research in different fields, however, none of the documents presented any specific contribution in relation to the renewal of environmental license. The results of this systematic review demonstrated a significant lack of studies on environmental licensing for mining activities, but in particular regarding the renewal of environmental licenses. Thus, it is possible to perceive a certain degree of novelty of the theme and the need for more academic research to answer society's wishes.
