Carbonized rice straw and straw babaçu decomposition in the production of ‘Yellow Sungold Dolled’ sunflower

The sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is an oilseed that is characterized by its adaptability to different edaphoclimatic conditions and its versatility, with ornamental use in animal feed, production of oil for human consumption and production of biodiesel. Among the alternative substrates, carbonized rice straw (CRS) has been intensively used in recent years to produce seedlings, another raw material with the potential for composition of substrates is the decomposed stem of the babassu palm (DSB). The objective was to evaluate different proportions of babassu and rice straw decomposed stem in sunflower development. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse, at the Center for Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the Federal University of Maranhão, in the municipality of Chapadinha-MA. A completely randomized design was adopted, with six treatments (T) and four replications. The treatments consisted of different substrate formulations with 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100% CRS plus DSB. The following variables were quantified: seedling emergence; number of leaves; plant height; stem diameter; root system length; root volume; dry mass of the root system; aerial part dry mass; fresh mass of the root system; aerial part fresh mass; clod stability. The data were submitted to analysis of variance by the “F” test, the T compared to each other by the Tukey test at 5% probability through the computer program Assistat®. It is concluded that T1 with 100% CRS plus 0% DSB has a positive influence on the development of ornamental sunflower plants.
