The selective collection is an instrument of the National Solid Waste Policy (NSWP), that, in its practice, the performance of recyclable material collectors stands out. However, small towns find it difficult to implement it. In this sense, it is essential that these towns define strategies to develop this environmental service. The State Solid Waste Plan from Ceará encourages the formation of public consortia, the implementation of selective collection and the inclusion of recyclable material collectors. Thus, this study aims to analyze the implementation of selective collection in Tabuleiro do Norte town, in the State of Ceará, Northeast Brazil, in the period between 2018 and 2020, through interviews with managers and documentary research. From the results, it is highlighted that more than 116 tons of waste with recyclable potential were collected and sold, with evolution over the years, but corresponding to the waste generation potential of less than two weeks in the area covered. Therefore, there are challenges to be overcome, ranging from community mobilization and engagement, adding value to the marketed mass and strengthening the identity and the belonging of the collectors in the municipality to the local association.
