Conservation and preservation of the environment must take into account the perception and behaviour of individuals with regard to environmental issues. From this perspective, the objective of this work was to analyse the perception of residents in the neighborhood of Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, about solid waste management and their level of environmental awareness, focusing on reverse logistics waste. The degree of environmental awareness was assessed based on the consumption habits and attitudes of the interviewees, and was related to gender, age, level of education, income and occupation. A total of 326 interviews were conducted based on a questionnaire containing 23 questions. Lickert scale was applied to obtain the level of environmental awareness. The results showed that 19% of the interviewees knew the concept of reverse logistics. Only 7.7% were aware of the topic, with the majority presenting potential traits of awareness. Females had a higher level of environmental awareness than males, 57% versus 45%. The level of environmental awareness was also higher among the elderly, over 60%. Environmental awareness increases in proportion to the level of schooling, family income, and stability in terms of work. Financial issues stand out among the motivations for recycling or reuse. Lack of time and difficulty in accessing collection points were the biggest demotivating factors, with percentages higher than 50%. It is believed that this work can contribute to the promotion of environmental education and the appropriate disposal of waste recommended in reverse logistics.
