Water quality in the Piracicaba River was assessed using the 2007 to 2017 database of the Water Management Institute of Minas Gerais (IGAM) in the cities of Rio Piracicaba, João Monlevade and Nova Era. The survey of the areas of the respective municipalities was carried out in the IDE-Sisema system with a mapping for 2005 from IBGE and another for 2015 from IBAMA. The water quality of the river is in the middle class according to the calculation of the Water Quality Index, IQA. Turbidity, Coliforms and E. coli had the greatest influence on the system. E. coli concentrations in the monitored stretch were above the recommended limit in 80% of the samples. The point RD026 was classified as mesotrophic and the points RD025 and RD029 as oligotrophic. From the year 2013 there was an increase in the total of N and P. nutrients. The maps generated indicated an increase in the area of 898.67ha in João Monlevade, 475.1ha in Rio Piracicaba and 171ha in Nova Era and the result was inversely correlated with the quality of the water.
