Landfills are still the most used option for the final disposal of solid urban waste (MSW). A well-planned and controlled structure with drainage systems, leachate treatment and systems for collecting and burning biogas are essential to avoid the emission of methane into the atmosphere. In this sense, the present study sought to evaluate the flow and quality of biogas from the landfill in Maceió/AL. The reading of the biogas flow in the landfill was performed in 15 vertical drains (wells) and the biogas qualification was performed by gas chromatography. The study showed that the flow of biogas is different in the drains and that the biogas has a satisfactory composition (56.86% methane) for energy use. The difference in the flow of the drains may be associated with cracks in the landfill, which shows that the implementation and adaptation of vertical drains and the landfill cover system are important elements that must be considered in the quantification and qualification of the flow of gas in the landfill. In this way, the present study contributes to the estimation of the quality and quantity of CH4, through vertical drains in a landfill.
