Occurrences of forest fires in Protected Areas are one of the main forms of destruction of natural resources, since these areas represent alternatives for nature conservation and protection of the customs of original populations. In this sense, the objective was to characterize the scars of fires in the Governador Indigenous Land - MA, including a buffer zone with 49,753.69 ha, in the period from 2000 to 2019. For this purpose, images from LANSAT 5, 7 and 8 satellites were acquired, in which the Normalized Burning Index (NDBR) was applied, in addition to obtaining data on hotspots and deforestation. In the indigenous land, a total of 44,168.85 ha of fire scars and 20,06458 ha in the buffer zone were obtained. Evidencing the year 2010 that had the largest area burned in the IT with 4,480 ha (10.63%) and the year 2012 for the ZA with 4,124.65 ha (8.30%). 14,204 outbreaks were detected between January 2000 and December 2019, of which 7,359 occurred in the TI and 6,845 in the ZA. There were 5,780.8 ha of deforestation in the TI and 41,525.3 ha in the ZA. These results reveal that even with a considerably small area of deforestation throughout the period studied, the Governador TI lacks incentives for the controlled use of fire, based on the ways of life of these communities, since a high degree of burn scars was detected.
