Shrimp farming is a growing trend in tropical regions of the world in recent decades. This is due to factors such as the market value of the shrimp, the increase in the consumer market and the adaptation of this to the cultivation. This article aims to analyze the scientific production on shrimp farming with the time frame between the years 1970 to 2018. Thus, the article presents the metrics of production and diffusion of scientific knowledge on the theme from the indexed results in the Web of ScienceTM database. As a result, it is pointed out that most of the studies involving shrimp farming analyze diseases and pathogens related to shrimp cultivation. There are studies that relate the integrated management of the activity to the reduction of diseases. Several factors (salinity, climate, temperature, rainfall, water quality, and effluents) can interfere with the management and development of the activity. More recent studies demonstrate that scientific research related to the activity still shows a latent concern with the white spot virus. In addition, environmental and economic feasibility studies have been developed in order to ensure that the activity improves performance, reducing operational (economic) costs and environmental impacts.
