This study aims to compare the efficiency in expense management in 7 higher education business groups in Brazil, in the period between 2013 and 2019. It was applied a two-stage survey method. In the first one, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) was applied to measure the efficiency of expenditures. In the second stage, a truncated regression model was applied to correct bias and test the statistical significance of the variables. The results identified the most efficient entities, the least efficient, and the factors that most influence the establishment of this ranking. About 35% of the institutions analyzed by this study were considered efficient. It is expected that this study will contribute to the scientific literature by demonstrating which variables play a key role in university management and provoking the discussion of the importance of improving efficiency for private institutions.
