Despite the perception about the recurrence of gravitational mass movements in the mountainous region of the State of Rio de Janeiro, research related to the factors responsible for the instability of slings in this locality is still incipient with regard to the basis for the purpose of preventive measures in the areas of risk and development of public policies, especially in relation to the knowledge of the behavior of mountain soils. In view of this, the present work sought to compile the main results related to two studies developed in the region, aimed at the structural diagnosis and collection of samples of soil profiles in cutting lines on the highways that connect the cities of Carmo, Sumidouro and Teresópolis (RJ) (Sector 1), and environmental analysis of the natural areas of 11 neighborhoods of Teresópolis (Sector 2), in order to present a diagnosis of these areas to present to the local public prosecutor for decision making, as well as to provide technical subsidies for public hearings related to the environmental impact resulting from the mass movement of natural and constructed areas that make up the relief of the municipalities investigated. Using the diagnostic technique employed, it was possible to determine the geological and soil characteristics regarding their structure and little depth that favor the susceptibility of these aspects of the study area and the displacement of material, when in rainy season. In addition, such areas are urbanly dense, whether precarious or not, potentiating the movement of natural mass of these slopes.
