Talquezal (Paspalum virgatum L.) and smut grass (Sporobolus indicus (L.) R. Br.) are very widespread poaceae in Brazilian livestock regions, common in degraded pasture conditions. In recent years they have become a constant problem in the state of Mato Grosso, where there are few studies that have evaluated their biological characteristics and the control of these species. The object of this research was to evaluate the effects of light and temperature on the seed germination of Paspalum virgatum L. (P. virgatum) and Sporobolus indicus (L.) R. Br. (S. indicus). The experiment was conducted in germination chambers using a factorial 4 x 2 scheme of treatments under four temperatures (25°C and 27°C constant, alternating 20-30°C and 20-25°C) with alternate light cycles (8h light/16h darkness) or absolute darkness. The percentage and speed of germination were evaluated up to 30 days after the start of the germination test. The two species showed differing seed physiological responses. S. indicus required light for germination while P. virgatum did not. The best temperatures for germination are 20-30 °C for S. indicus, and 20-30°C or 20-25 °C for P. virgatum.
