Conundrums of people management: a study of managers

The purpose of this paper is to understand how small business managers must deal with dilemmas related to staff management in the city of Belo Horizonte, based on inescapable conundrums of managing mentioned in studies developed by Mintzberg (2010), particularly the 'people conundrum'. 45 companies were investigated using a qualitative descriptive exploratory approach. Data collection procedure was designed from the implementation of a questionnaire, and the data were categorized and analyzed according to content analysis. The results reveal useful tactics and strategies in management, presenting dilemmas faced by small business managers and their specific ways of acting.
