Analysis of the distribution of meningitis cases in the city of São Paulo between 2017 to 2021

To describe the distribution of meningitis cases among residents of the city of São Paulo, reported between the years 2017 and 2021. Retrospective descriptive observational study with cases of meningitis reported in the Notifiable Health Conditions Information System. The incidence of meningitis cases ranged from 0.59 to 2.63 cases per 10,000 inhabitants, with a peak in 2018 and a drop in the rate in 2020 and 2021. Cases were more frequent in males and the most affected age group was from 0 to 14 years old. The main etiological agents were viruses (69.5%), 'unspecified bacteria' (9.8%), Meningococci (7.56%) and Pneumococci (5.63%). The study showed a decrease in the general incidence of meningitis in the city of São Paulo in the years 2020 and 2021. Differences were observed in the occurrence of the disease in the health regions of the municipality.
