While large cities offer numerous opportunities to their residents, in São Paulo and in other large urban centers, disorganized spatial growth has occurred where zoning requirements and directives based on the cities’ respective masters plans have not been respected. Physical space is becoming more and more scarce and due to a lack of planning and enforcement on the part of government agencies responsible for large cities, buildings are being built closer and closer to areas that generate high levels of noise, such major streets, train tracks, airports, and bus terminals, among others. Urban noise is a problem that needs to be solved or mitigated, being that it is a major cause of health problems. The authors measured urban noise levels at 6 locations (P1, P2, P3, P4, P5, and P6) around the Guilhermina-Esperança Metro Station in the city of São Paulo. The measurements were taken using a decibel meter calibrated in a laboratory accredited by INMETRO. The results of this study demonstrate that in the area studied, the levels of noise caused by passing trains as well as the ambient noise surpass the limits established by the technical standard that regulates such noise ABNT – NBR 10.151:2000. This noise generates conditions that are unsuitable for living, constituting a environmental health problem. One of the solutions proposed to alleviate or mitigate the impact of the noise is the installation of noise barriers.
