The petrol industry is a major topic. While it holds a considerable percentage of the all the energy sources consumed worldwide, it is also considered one of the biggest threats when it comes to “greenhouse effect†and “sustainabilityâ€. Thus, the licensing of activities that deals whether with extraction, refining or commercialization of petrol and its products should focus on minimizing the impacts caused by their construction and operation. If any kind of environmental damage still happens, the owner of the fuel station is held responsible. The present study aims to analyze, the licensing process related to this kind of activity in Brazil. After studying the principal Brazilian documents of the environmental licensing regarding fuel stations, it evidenced the importance of an efficient licensing process, once the contamination of underground water could potentially spread to an aquifer, making it possible to compromise the health standards of the local population.
