This article aims to provide support to support the discussion about the effective selective collection in the municipal area of Juazeiro do Norte, a medium - sized municipality located in the State of Ceará, in the northeast region of Brazil. Therefore, the methodological strategy was based on the consultation of academic studies, theses and dissertations, published in the period from 2004 to 2015, which presented models of selective collection programs implemented in Brazilian municipalities. The databases of Portal de Periodicos de Capes and Portal Buscador Owl were consulted using the terms ‘selective collection’ and ‘solid waste’. As results: the selective collection models adopted based on the academic studies analyzed are presented; and it is proposed the implementation of a selective collection program in Juazeiro do Norte, including the installation of ecopoints for voluntary waste delivery, the service of selective collection door-to-door and the implementation of three waste sorting units. The collection, sorting and commercialization of the selectively collected materials would be carried out by the associations of collectors, counting on the operational support of the Municipality, through duly concluded agreements between the parties. Finally, it is necessary to invest in a wide dissemination of the activities of the differentiated collection with the population to achieve success in the program, including sanitary and environmental education campaigns, dedicated to guide the types of waste and their appropriate disposal.
