Abstract

The Metropolitan Region of Natal (RMN) has experienced the problems that the great urban centers suffer from the increase of the vehicular fleet in the last decade and its influence on air quality. The presence of programs that aim at reducing atmospheric emissions and maintaining air quality is a strategy that positively assists these issues. In RMN the buses of the public passenger transport fleet are monitored by the Depollute Program with regard to the levels of opacity through vehicular measurements based on the standards established by the Air Pollution Control Program for Automotive Vehicles (PROCONVE). There are few published works about the reality of the atmospheric emissions by urban, semi-urban and road buses in RN state. Therefore, this article aims to evaluate the atmospheric CO2 emissions in the Natal Metropolitan Region using the analysis of data from the measurements provided by the Coordination of the Depollute Program in the years 2010 to 2014. The calculation of the CO2 emission took into consideration the Fuel Consumption Index (ICC) in km/L and the CO2 Emission Factor in kg/L per diesel fuel. There was a decrease in CO2 emissions over the years and it was found that the variation of the CO2 emission is directly related to the variation of the percentage of failure of the fleet in the measurements made and directly linked to the ICC. It is recommended the purpose of public policies aimed at the environmental quality of the air, with a focus on mobile sources that takes into account the use of fuels with a lower emission factor and establishing measurements as a preventive measure to minimize CO2 emissions by transport of passengers.
