Attraction versus production is a broadly debated discussion about the functionality of artificial reefs (ARs) for biodiversity, especially fish. In this sense, a systematic literature review was carried out to assess the “attraction vs. production” of fish in ARs on a global scale. A total of 98 articles were published between 1962 and 2021, with 52% carried out in the American continent, followed by Europe (20%), Asia (15%), Oceania (11%) and Africa (2%). The debate is still an object of discussion, since a large part (66%) falls into the “inaccurate” category regarding the potential attractor or producer of RAs, regardless of the size, location and complexity of artificial structures and landscape attributes. Furthermore, it is observed that most studies focused on the productivity of RAs are restricted to short periods of time after their implementation, especially due to the limitation of long-term funding of monitoring programs at a global level.
