The objective of this study was to present an overview of the chemical, medicinal properties and legislation related to Cannabis. A bibliographic survey was carried out in the MEDLINE/PubMed databases; Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO) and SCOPUS (Elsevier). The period defined was from 2011 to 2022, searching for scientific articles (originals, reviews and/or case reports) in English, Portuguese and Spanish. For this purpose, the following keywords were used: “Cannabis sativa + medicinal properties”; “Cannabis sativa + medicinal uses”; “Cannabis sativa + chemical properties”; “Cannabis sativa + chemical compounds”; “Cannabis sativa + legislation + Brazil”; “Cannabis sativa + laws + Brazil”; “Cannabis sativa + decrees + Brazil”. The screening was performed through the title, abstract and keywords. Regarding the chemical properties of Cannabis sativa, the journals with the highest number of published works were Molecules, International Journal of Molecular Sciences, European Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, Journal of Chromatography A, Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis and Phytochemical Analysis. Regarding the medicinal properties of Cannabis sativa, it was noted that the journals with the highest number of published works were the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, Molecules and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. It is believed that the present study contributed to the identification and quantization of research related to the chemical and medicinal properties of Cannabis sativa, in addition, it demonstrated that there are still many steps needed for research in this field to advance.
