The inequality in the management of resources for basic sanitation in Brazil has a direct influence on the treatment and distribution of water to the population, which encourages the search for development of technologies that make these processes more accessible. Electrolysis appears as an alternative that provides the on-site generation of agents that can be used in the stage of water disinfection for decentralized public supply. The use of electrolysis disinfection in communities not supplied by water distribution networks is a convenient solution to the problem. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the use of salt water electrolysis for the production of a concentrated chlorinated solution, through the development of a bench scale continuous flow electrolytic reactor with stainless steel electrodes. From a factorial design, the electric current, contact time and NaCl concentration in the pre-electrolysis salt water were varied under different levels. Each arrangement generated a specific chlorinated solution. Assessment of the treatment potential of each solution generated were performed, and, with the aid of the AHP method of decision support, it was possible to conclude that the dosage of 30 g/L of NaCl, contact time of 33 minutes and applied electric current of 5 Ampère, corresponded to the best operating condition. Thus, the proposed disinfection system can be indicated for full-scale application of drinking water disinfection for decentralized populations.
