The present work aims to carry out the qualitative optimization, based on Linear Programming, in a water resources system present in the upper course of the Piranhas (PB) river that integrates two series reservoirs, Engenheiro Ávidos, located in the municipality of Cajazeiras, and São Gonçalo, in the municipality of Sousa, both at State of Paraíba. The optimization routine considers five objective functions and constraints related to modeling the Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Dissolved Oxygen, nitrogen and phosphate forms, in rivers and reservoirs, as well as the methods employed to linearize as existing nonlinearities. Furthermore, the degree of representativeness of the modeling for the study area was also evaluated. Effluents are associated with the discharge of domestic sewage from municipalities close to water bodies. Two Scenarios were studied, in the first the effluents were released without considering a previous treatment, in the second Scenario it was considered that the effluents were subjected to treatment through stabilization ponds. The results indicated that the optimization model allowed, in both Scenarios, to find optimized solutions so that the parameter concentrations remained, throughout the operation period, at acceptable levels for the class of water bodie. Mathematical equations and kinetic coefficients, furthermore, could adequately represent the study area, with low calculated errors.
